Ferncrest was a lovely escape during one of the busiest weeks of the year in Acadia. The upstairs apartment was spotless and the view was amazing. We loved coming back to Bruce’s quiet, peaceful home and yard after hiking every day. The beds are very comfortable and although it was unusually hot, there are window fans and we slept better than at home. Bruce is an outstanding host and we appreciated all the help he gave us in choosing hikes and activities on the island. We cooked all our own meals and the kitchen had everything we needed. Laundry right outside the apartment door was a plus. Ferncrest is a perfect place to stay for those prefer tranquility to having stores and restaurants within walking distance. – Margaret @ AirBnB
My daughter and I spent ten days at Ferncrest. It was a true “home away from home”. All the rooms were clean and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with everything you might need for any kind of fancy cooking. There were shelves with books about Maine and Acadia, plus other reading materials, board games, and puzzles. The surroundings of the house were scenic and peaceful. Bruce was an excellent host. He made sure we found his place, and had lots of helpful maps, brochures and advice to share. We recommend this home to any traveler who is interested in staying on the quieter side of Mount Desert Island. – Marlies @ AirBnB
We returned to Ferncrest for the second time this summer and were as happy and enchanted as ever. The home is in a beautiful, pastoral setting — each morning we woke from our deep sleep to gaze over a misty meadow. By day, our adventures on this lovely island included hikes, bikes and exploration of the villages dotting this lovely island. This cabin — on the island’s quiet side — was a perfect setting for our 2nd vacation on this wondrous island. — Lisa U. @ HomeAway
Ferncrest was exactly as advertised. It’s extremely quiet, beautiful scenery and a short walk to the National park. The decor of the home is perfect. There is an extensive library to use as well as games and cards. Bruce is a wonderful host, easy to speak with and has a vast wealth of knowledge of all things Maine. We hope to come back in another season to be able shut our phones off and connect again with our surroundings. Great hikes, great views, great home, happy guests! – Randi-Brynn @ AirBnB
The property is pristine and beautiful. The view in this picture is correct. The apartment is clean and nicely decorated. We had everything we needed supplied for. Bruce J. was hospitable, courteous, informative, and all around a nice guy to talk with. He made our trip a success from the places in the park to see to the enjoyable conversations. There are 4 or 5 harbors to drive to for food. We had lobster at Thurston’s in Northeast Harbor, Sunday brunch at Cafe This Way in Bar Harbor. We drove the national park loop to enjoy many different places, biked the carriage trails which were outstandingly beautiful, hiked up a mountain with a park ranger’s interpretation to boot, and strolled through two lovely gardens not to be missed. Overall our visit was well worth it; we are not disappointed at all with our lodging; in fact we hope to come back some day and enjoy the park more and staying at Ferncrest (#141438) would be our desire in order to get the most from the trip. — Scott W. @ HomeAway
My 12-year-old daughter and I stayed at Ferncrest for a week and it was hard to leave, we loved it so much. Bruce greeted us with warmth and a vase of freshly cut lilacs from his enormous and amazing lilac bush. Everyday we’d try to fit in as many things as we possibly could on Mount Desert Island and within Acadia—hiking, kayaking, birding, whale watching, lobster meals, and simply being in awe of the beauty surrounding us at all times. It was always so lovely to come back to Ferncrest and relax.
We were amazed at the sounds of coyotes and loons—the incredible songs of the variety of birds, all audible through the windows. Ahhhh … the view! To see the mountains lit up by the sun in the evening after a cloudy day was joyous. The darkness of night opened up the most magical world of infinite stars and hundreds of glowing fireflies. We were so thankful for Bruce’s tips such as to watch the fireflies and to hike Wonderland on a foggy day. He has tremendous knowledge of the area and I was thankful that he was able to reassure my daughter that she didn’t have to worry—being a city kid; she had some fears of the trails and the possibile danger.
The living space had everything we needed to feel at home. It was spacious and cozy, stocked with a fantastic selection of books for rainy days and evenings, and filled with little surprises. It was fun to search for the secret drawer, and to drink tea each day from the adorable bunny mugs. This was an unforgettable getaway, and we hope to return for more amazement and inspiration. We highly recommend Bruce’s Ferncrest! — Jody B. @ HomeAway
We found Ferncrest to be better than advertised, great location, lovely vistas, and very peaceful. Bruce, our host could not have been more friendly and helpful. We hope to make it back to Acadia in the future, and will definitely be looking to stay at Ferncrest again. — Larry S. @ HomeAway
What an amazing place and great find. Bruce has created the perfect getaway on the “quiet side ” of the island. It was clean and just as described. Bruce offered us so many suggestions of great hikes and places to see that it took us three days to get to Acadia! Beautiful night skies from his back yard and great views of the mountain from your window. Close to great hikes and good food. Cadillac Mtn is less than 30 minutes away. If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place for you!
Thanks so much Bruce! Your apartment is perfect—from the full kitchen, to warm bathroom, to cozy bedroom with heavy covers. Thanks for the recommendation of Fiddlers’ Green: a perfect trout! Love the view of the Western Mtns. from the dinning table. Missed the loons calling this a.m.
Glad to know that Ferncrest exists so it can be recommended to anyone looking for a place to stay on the Quiet Side. — Andy C.
Ferncrest is ideally situated on the quiet side of MDI, a perfect spot for a quiet vacation away from city life. The property is nicely laid out with a private entrance and well-maintained. Bruce is an accommodating host and knowledgeable about Mount Desert. The view of Western Mountain from the second floor apartment is an adjunct to that of gentle fields and apple trees immediately below. I recommend a hike across Western, really three separate peaks, for an adventure in mystery and tranquility on an infrequently visited spot in Acadia National Park. No need to go early to avoid crowds. For those not accustomed to climbing, venture over to Seawall for the sound of surf pounding Maine granite or to inspect tide pools. Nesting ducks in season may be seen nearby. There is always Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, Ocean Drive, Mail Boat to the Cranberries, so much to do in this very special area, an existence not duplicated anywhere else that I have ever been. After a busy day hiking and photographing, I found Ferncrest the perfect respite for recharging I hope to visit again. — Anonymous @ HomeAway
