The description of what was awaiting us fit this home to a “T!” The picture you see over the fence to the mountain was what we got to see every time we looked out the windows from the kitchen. Everything was there that we would need to be able to prepare the food we brought with us and there was space in the cupboards for us to put some of our dry goods away.
The property was very nice and everything inside was clean and ready for us when we arrived and the price for renting it for a week was reasonable and worth every penny!
The owner, Bruce, was very helpful and even went out of his way to, as he put it, “Build a fire” for us. He has a small fire pit where he took the time to set up the wood and paper for us to have a fire on an evening he was going to be out. All we had to do was remove the cover he had put over it and light it!
This property was perfect for my wife, daughter and I. I would recommend this property without reservation to my friends and family (and anyone looking for a nice little place for a getaway). A family of up to four, or even two couples would have adequate space here for a weeks vacation.
My wife and I especially liked the fact that this property is on the opposite side of the island from Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor was only about a 20 minute drive, but it was nice to be able to leave all of the activity and touristy stuff behind and go “home” each evening to a quite and peaceful location. If you enjoy the outdoors there are more options to explore than you could cover in a month of vacation on Mt Desert Island. The biggest challenge is deciding what to do. And if you enjoy seafood, or lobster in particular, take a trip to Bernard, near Seal Cove, and find Thurston’s Lobster Pound. They have, in my opinion, some of the best lobster around! — Jared K. @ HomeAway
Bruce has turned the top floor of his house into a whimsical jewel of an apartment. If you want to own a charming cottage on the wooded quiet side of Mount Desert Island, save yourself a lot of trouble and just rent Bruce’s place. It feels like home. It is thoughtfully decorated with art, books, music, and items that make you smile. It was clean and comfortable. The beds were firm and allowed us to sleep in the absolute silence of the area without the back aches typically caused by beds in hotels and rentals. The location is far from the crowds of tourists and noise of towns and traffic yet perfectly suited for hiking into Acadia or lovely drives around the entire island. We felt like locals rather than tourists. Bruce is a quiet gracious host respectful of privacy yet available with information when needed. We would highly recommend this rental. — Joan B. @ AirBnB
Bruce was very friendly and accommodating. He is very knowledgeable of the area and was able to give us suggestions on where to go. Bruce really loves the area and takes pride in his home. Guest quarters were cozy, clean, and had a lovely view. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed for cooking including salt, pepper, garlic salt, and olive oil. Especially liked having a washer and dryer available for us to use. Truly enjoyed this quiet sanctuary and would stay again. Highly recommended. — Shelley P. @ AirBnB
What a wonderful experience we had staying near Acadia National Park at Bruce’s lovely Ferncrest home. The cozy two-bedroom apartment on the second floor was perfect for our small family, and the kitchen setup was just the right size for us to make most of our own meals. Ferncrest is an older home, but Bruce has done a great job remodeling it and furnishing it so that it is comfortable and practical without losing its charm and character. It was the perfect place to come “home” to after long days of gallivanting. This location borders the western side of Acadia National Park and is minutes from several ponds, lovely walks, and Bass Harbor. It is a scenic and convenient 15-minute drive to enter the more popular sections on the east side of the island as well. Bruce is the ideal host, providing great suggestions, advice, and hospitality. He made sure the apartment was well-stocked with all we’d need for our stay: linens, pillows, books, and cooking utensils. Knowing we had a five year-old daughter, he even pulled out several toys and books as well as a “treasure drawer” for her to enjoy. He provided ample maps and guides for us to use while exploring the park, and gladly answered any questions we had. This was our first AirBnB stay, and we couldn’t have asked for a better fit for this trip. Thank you so much, Bruce! We hope to return to Ferncrest one day! — Mary D. @ AirBnB
The house is on a quiet side street in the western portion of Acadia. The most popular attractions in Acadia are on the eastern portion, which is twenty minutes away. The house is relatively close to a famous and excellent lobster shack, which Bruce recommended. Bruce lives on the first floor of the house, and the second floor is the space for rent. Bruce was home most of the time, and was very helpful. The apartment was clean and comfortable. It stood out in that it was very well supplied with dishes, kitchen utensils, olive oil, containers, saran wrap, tour books, fast wi-fi, and more. The main detraction was the mosquito population. Mosquitoes were present in much of Acadia, including in Bruce’s driveway. — David L. @ AirBnB
We found Ferncrest to be better than advertised, great location, lovely vistas, and very peaceful. Bruce, our host could not have been more friendly and helpful. We hope to make it back to Acadia in the future, and will definitely be looking to stay at Ferncrest again. — Larry S. @ HomeAway
We were simply thrilled with our stay at Ferncrest. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy nature’s beauty and quiet in a wonderful location right next to Acadia, this is the place for you.
Bruce is a wonderful and kind host and provided us with advice and information prior to the booking. He gave us some excellent hiking tips and made every effort to ensure we were comfortable. And how could we not be? Bruce has a lovely home and the apartment, which he rents is just so cozy and homely that one struggles to leave. The descriptions provided are absolutely accurate. The only thing one cannot “read” from the website is the charm of the place although photos are telltale signs of it. The location is perfect for exploring the island although we much preferred staying on the Quiet Side than the busy area in the east. We very much enjoyed Thurston’s lobster in Bernard and highly recommend it. There are many interesting and varied trails right on the doorstep too! We hope to return and have already recommended the place to relatives and friends. Thank you, Bruce!
Super location and super place to stay. Spotlessly maintained with all amenities. Absolutely recommend it.
Bruce is a great host with the best suggestions for activities, sites to visit in the area and restaurants to dine at. — Anonymous @ HomeAway
What an amazing place and great find. Bruce has created the perfect getaway on the “quiet side ” of the island. It was clean and just as described. Bruce offered us so many suggestions of great hikes and places to see that it took us three days to get to Acadia! Beautiful night skies from his back yard and great views of the mountain from your window. Close to great hikes and good food. Cadillac Mtn is less than 30 minutes away. If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place for you!
Thanks so much Bruce! Your apartment is perfect—from the full kitchen, to warm bathroom, to cozy bedroom with heavy covers. Thanks for the recommendation of Fiddlers’ Green: a perfect trout! Love the view of the Western Mtns. from the dinning table. Missed the loons calling this a.m.
Glad to know that Ferncrest exists so it can be recommended to anyone looking for a place to stay on the Quiet Side. — Andy C.
