Bruce’s apartment is charming and relaxing, offering guests a sense of home in the midst of all Mount Desert Island has to offer. Bruce has incredible knowledge and resources about the area which will not disappoint. We enjoyed being on the “quiet side”, while still having easy access to the parks, beaches, mountains and more. – Kristy @ AirBnB
We returned to Ferncrest for the second time this summer and were as happy and enchanted as ever. The home is in a beautiful, pastoral setting — each morning we woke from our deep sleep to gaze over a misty meadow. By day, our adventures on this lovely island included hikes, bikes and exploration of the villages dotting this lovely island. This cabin — on the island’s quiet side — was a perfect setting for our 2nd vacation on this wondrous island. — Lisa U. @ HomeAway
Thank you Bruce. We had a wonderful time staying at Ferncrest. The apt was just the right size. We love all the helpful tips you gave us: GREAT places to eat where the locals gather, GREAT trails to walk for the best views around, GREAT ideas for entertainment if we wanted. You also have a GREAT collection of books, maps, etc about the island. That really helped us find our way around and feel connected. Knowing the “story” helped us connect to the locals, the wildlife, and the island as a whole. We now feel that we have left a piece of ourselves on the “quiet side”. Thanks!!!! — Julia R. @ HomeAway
This is a nice, clean, quiet place to rent. We enjoyed our stay there and the owner is considerate and helpful if you’re coming to this area of Maine for the first time. I would recommend staying here, it’s a good place to relax and close enough to Bar Harbor, etc. to easily get around. — Anonymous @ HomeAway
Peace and quiet minutes from Acadia National Park. Terrific location for hiking, biking and kayaking. The house was a haven of calm and silence – A ++ sleep quality. Most relaxing experience for outdoors lovers, who don’t care much for the ice cream parlors a and tourist shops of a Bar Harbor. The house was also well stocked with all cooking utensils, iron, beach towels, etc. Last, Bruce was a wealth of knowledge to recommend activities and really helpful in helping make the best of our visit. We shall return! — Marie-Laure C. @ AirBnB
My fiancé and I had a relaxing and peaceful stay at Ferncrest. It was exactly what we needed. Bruce was such a helpful host. He gave us great pointers about hikes, bike rides, swimming spots and restaurants. His home is a cozy, lovely spot in the paradise that is Acadia. One of the best nights was when Bruce built us a fire and we stargazed (a rare occurrence for New Yorkers ;). We would highly recommend staying here and we hope to come back again soon! — Emily L. @ AirBnB

My 12-year-old daughter and I stayed at Ferncrest for a week and it was hard to leave, we loved it so much. Bruce greeted us with warmth and a vase of freshly cut lilacs from his enormous and amazing lilac bush. Everyday we’d try to fit in as many things as we possibly could on Mount Desert Island and within Acadia—hiking, kayaking, birding, whale watching, lobster meals, and simply being in awe of the beauty surrounding us at all times. It was always so lovely to come back to Ferncrest and relax.
We were amazed at the sounds of coyotes and loons—the incredible songs of the variety of birds, all audible through the windows. Ahhhh … the view! To see the mountains lit up by the sun in the evening after a cloudy day was joyous. The darkness of night opened up the most magical world of infinite stars and hundreds of glowing fireflies. We were so thankful for Bruce’s tips such as to watch the fireflies and to hike Wonderland on a foggy day. He has tremendous knowledge of the area and I was thankful that he was able to reassure my daughter that she didn’t have to worry—being a city kid; she had some fears of the trails and the possibile danger.
The living space had everything we needed to feel at home. It was spacious and cozy, stocked with a fantastic selection of books for rainy days and evenings, and filled with little surprises. It was fun to search for the secret drawer, and to drink tea each day from the adorable bunny mugs. This was an unforgettable getaway, and we hope to return for more amazement and inspiration. We highly recommend Bruce’s Ferncrest! — Jody B. @ HomeAway
Ferncrest is ideally situated on the quiet side of MDI, a perfect spot for a quiet vacation away from city life. The property is nicely laid out with a private entrance and well-maintained. Bruce is an accommodating host and knowledgeable about Mount Desert. The view of Western Mountain from the second floor apartment is an adjunct to that of gentle fields and apple trees immediately below. I recommend a hike across Western, really three separate peaks, for an adventure in mystery and tranquility on an infrequently visited spot in Acadia National Park. No need to go early to avoid crowds. For those not accustomed to climbing, venture over to Seawall for the sound of surf pounding Maine granite or to inspect tide pools. Nesting ducks in season may be seen nearby. There is always Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, Ocean Drive, Mail Boat to the Cranberries, so much to do in this very special area, an existence not duplicated anywhere else that I have ever been. After a busy day hiking and photographing, I found Ferncrest the perfect respite for recharging I hope to visit again. — Anonymous @ HomeAway
Even before we left Ferncrest, we were already dreaming of our return. This idyllic retreat, located on Mt. Desert’s “quiet side” was a perfect place from which to launch adventures across the island and a homey, though well-appointed, place to return to each night. We loved the games and books that lined the shelves, the full kitchen, comfortable beds and small artistic details that made every room feel personal and personally connected to the island. Most of all we loved the view of the meadows and mountains from our window. Bruce was a knowledgeable and generous host whose suggestions led us to swimming and hiking adventures we would not likely have discovered otherwise. With Ferncrest as our home away from home we plan to return to enjoy this beautiful island’s many treasures. — Lisa B. @ HomeAway
