“Ferncrest” is a real treasure. Bruce has added some beautiful touches that make this place feel like home. The reading nook is cozy and comfortable. The kitchen is set up for storing groceries and preparing food, which comes in handy since it’s on the less busy part of the island. If you’re up early, you can catch stunning sunrises from the kitchen window. And it’s a short drive from Seal Cove, where you can catch fantastic sunsets if the weather cooperates. It’s a quick and beautiful drive to the busier parts of the island and Acadia. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Don’t pass up this gem! – Danielle @ AirBnB
Ferncrest was a lovely escape during one of the busiest weeks of the year in Acadia. The upstairs apartment was spotless and the view was amazing. We loved coming back to Bruce’s quiet, peaceful home and yard after hiking every day. The beds are very comfortable and although it was unusually hot, there are window fans and we slept better than at home. Bruce is an outstanding host and we appreciated all the help he gave us in choosing hikes and activities on the island. We cooked all our own meals and the kitchen had everything we needed. Laundry right outside the apartment door was a plus. Ferncrest is a perfect place to stay for those prefer tranquility to having stores and restaurants within walking distance. – Margaret @ AirBnB
My daughter and I spent ten days at Ferncrest. It was a true “home away from home”. All the rooms were clean and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with everything you might need for any kind of fancy cooking. There were shelves with books about Maine and Acadia, plus other reading materials, board games, and puzzles. The surroundings of the house were scenic and peaceful. Bruce was an excellent host. He made sure we found his place, and had lots of helpful maps, brochures and advice to share. We recommend this home to any traveler who is interested in staying on the quieter side of Mount Desert Island. – Marlies @ AirBnB
Great stay in a nice upstairs apartment on the quiet side of the island right on the edge of the park. Bruce was a nice host and answered any questions we had. Our 2 year old was happy with the toy box full of antique type toys (toys are always better at other people’s houses!). The kitchen was great for us to be able to cook a lot of meals to avoid eating out too often. Overall great experience and we would recommend! – Amanda @ AirBnB

The description of what was awaiting us fit this home to a “T!” The picture you see over the fence to the mountain was what we got to see every time we looked out the windows from the kitchen. Everything was there that we would need to be able to prepare the food we brought with us and there was space in the cupboards for us to put some of our dry goods away.
The property was very nice and everything inside was clean and ready for us when we arrived and the price for renting it for a week was reasonable and worth every penny!
The owner, Bruce, was very helpful and even went out of his way to, as he put it, “Build a fire” for us. He has a small fire pit where he took the time to set up the wood and paper for us to have a fire on an evening he was going to be out. All we had to do was remove the cover he had put over it and light it!
This property was perfect for my wife, daughter and I. I would recommend this property without reservation to my friends and family (and anyone looking for a nice little place for a getaway). A family of up to four, or even two couples would have adequate space here for a weeks vacation.
My wife and I especially liked the fact that this property is on the opposite side of the island from Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor was only about a 20 minute drive, but it was nice to be able to leave all of the activity and touristy stuff behind and go “home” each evening to a quite and peaceful location. If you enjoy the outdoors there are more options to explore than you could cover in a month of vacation on Mt Desert Island. The biggest challenge is deciding what to do. And if you enjoy seafood, or lobster in particular, take a trip to Bernard, near Seal Cove, and find Thurston’s Lobster Pound. They have, in my opinion, some of the best lobster around! — Jared K. @ HomeAway
What a wonderful experience we had staying near Acadia National Park at Bruce’s lovely Ferncrest home. The cozy two-bedroom apartment on the second floor was perfect for our small family, and the kitchen setup was just the right size for us to make most of our own meals. Ferncrest is an older home, but Bruce has done a great job remodeling it and furnishing it so that it is comfortable and practical without losing its charm and character. It was the perfect place to come “home” to after long days of gallivanting. This location borders the western side of Acadia National Park and is minutes from several ponds, lovely walks, and Bass Harbor. It is a scenic and convenient 15-minute drive to enter the more popular sections on the east side of the island as well. Bruce is the ideal host, providing great suggestions, advice, and hospitality. He made sure the apartment was well-stocked with all we’d need for our stay: linens, pillows, books, and cooking utensils. Knowing we had a five year-old daughter, he even pulled out several toys and books as well as a “treasure drawer” for her to enjoy. He provided ample maps and guides for us to use while exploring the park, and gladly answered any questions we had. This was our first AirBnB stay, and we couldn’t have asked for a better fit for this trip. Thank you so much, Bruce! We hope to return to Ferncrest one day! — Mary D. @ AirBnB
Thanks so much Bruce! Your apartment is perfect—from the full kitchen, to warm bathroom, to cozy bedroom with heavy covers. Thanks for the recommendation of Fiddlers’ Green: a perfect trout! Love the view of the Western Mtns. from the dinning table. Missed the loons calling this a.m.
Glad to know that Ferncrest exists so it can be recommended to anyone looking for a place to stay on the Quiet Side. — Andy C.
Even before we left Ferncrest, we were already dreaming of our return. This idyllic retreat, located on Mt. Desert’s “quiet side” was a perfect place from which to launch adventures across the island and a homey, though well-appointed, place to return to each night. We loved the games and books that lined the shelves, the full kitchen, comfortable beds and small artistic details that made every room feel personal and personally connected to the island. Most of all we loved the view of the meadows and mountains from our window. Bruce was a knowledgeable and generous host whose suggestions led us to swimming and hiking adventures we would not likely have discovered otherwise. With Ferncrest as our home away from home we plan to return to enjoy this beautiful island’s many treasures. — Lisa B. @ HomeAway
Very comfortable suite within a short distance to Acadia National Park. The rooms are spacious and comfortable offering three levels of pillow firmness with a well stocked library. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and the washer and dryer are very accessible. We had a wonderful time in the park as Bruce was able to direct us locations we had not heard about. Some great swimming holes nearby and several hiking trails. The place is very comfortable, clean and well located. We hope to fit this into our travel plans in the future. I highly recommend this property! — Michaell M. @ HomeAway
