“Ferncrest” is a real treasure. Bruce has added some beautiful touches that make this place feel like home. The reading nook is cozy and comfortable. The kitchen is set up for storing groceries and preparing food, which comes in handy since it’s on the less busy part of the island. If you’re up early, you can catch stunning sunrises from the kitchen window. And it’s a short drive from Seal Cove, where you can catch fantastic sunsets if the weather cooperates. It’s a quick and beautiful drive to the busier parts of the island and Acadia. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Don’t pass up this gem! – Danielle @ AirBnB
We very much enjoyed our stay there. We appreciated the quiet, peaceful setting. Bruce was very helpful in his suggestions about how to best explore Acadia National Park. We would definitely go there again and would recommend Ferncrest to our friends. June W. @ HomeAway
My fiancé and I had a relaxing and peaceful stay at Ferncrest. It was exactly what we needed. Bruce was such a helpful host. He gave us great pointers about hikes, bike rides, swimming spots and restaurants. His home is a cozy, lovely spot in the paradise that is Acadia. One of the best nights was when Bruce built us a fire and we stargazed (a rare occurrence for New Yorkers ;). We would highly recommend staying here and we hope to come back again soon! — Emily L. @ AirBnB
It seems to me if you are going to visit New England, you would want the place you stayed in to feel like it was in New England. Our attic suite did exactly that. The furniture and accessories were chosen with care to add to the New England feel of the suite. The bedrooms were roomy and the mattresses were firm, but not hard. We were seeking a location close to the park and Ferncrest is right there. As city dwellers we were thrilled with the stars in the night sky. Bruce gave us great directions, he is right, the GPS became unreliable as we approached his home. Even though we were late, he greeted us when we arrived, provided us with great info about the park. He was always there when we left in the morning. We found him to be welcoming, helpful, friendly and respectful of our privacy. — Rosemary H. @ AirBnB
Very nice, cozy apartment with split entrances. Well stocked with books and brochures about the park and surrounding area. Bruce was very knowledgeable and provided excellent recommendations on a drizzly/cloudy day. The shared laundry was a big help after a few days camping. — Gina F. @ AirBnB
Bruce was very friendly and accommodating. He is very knowledgeable of the area and was able to give us suggestions on where to go. Bruce really loves the area and takes pride in his home. Guest quarters were cozy, clean, and had a lovely view. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed for cooking including salt, pepper, garlic salt, and olive oil. Especially liked having a washer and dryer available for us to use. Truly enjoyed this quiet sanctuary and would stay again. Highly recommended. — Shelley P. @ AirBnB
What a wonderful experience we had staying near Acadia National Park at Bruce’s lovely Ferncrest home. The cozy two-bedroom apartment on the second floor was perfect for our small family, and the kitchen setup was just the right size for us to make most of our own meals. Ferncrest is an older home, but Bruce has done a great job remodeling it and furnishing it so that it is comfortable and practical without losing its charm and character. It was the perfect place to come “home” to after long days of gallivanting. This location borders the western side of Acadia National Park and is minutes from several ponds, lovely walks, and Bass Harbor. It is a scenic and convenient 15-minute drive to enter the more popular sections on the east side of the island as well. Bruce is the ideal host, providing great suggestions, advice, and hospitality. He made sure the apartment was well-stocked with all we’d need for our stay: linens, pillows, books, and cooking utensils. Knowing we had a five year-old daughter, he even pulled out several toys and books as well as a “treasure drawer” for her to enjoy. He provided ample maps and guides for us to use while exploring the park, and gladly answered any questions we had. This was our first AirBnB stay, and we couldn’t have asked for a better fit for this trip. Thank you so much, Bruce! We hope to return to Ferncrest one day! — Mary D. @ AirBnB
My 12-year-old daughter and I stayed at Ferncrest for a week and it was hard to leave, we loved it so much. Bruce greeted us with warmth and a vase of freshly cut lilacs from his enormous and amazing lilac bush. Everyday we’d try to fit in as many things as we possibly could on Mount Desert Island and within Acadia—hiking, kayaking, birding, whale watching, lobster meals, and simply being in awe of the beauty surrounding us at all times. It was always so lovely to come back to Ferncrest and relax.
We were amazed at the sounds of coyotes and loons—the incredible songs of the variety of birds, all audible through the windows. Ahhhh … the view! To see the mountains lit up by the sun in the evening after a cloudy day was joyous. The darkness of night opened up the most magical world of infinite stars and hundreds of glowing fireflies. We were so thankful for Bruce’s tips such as to watch the fireflies and to hike Wonderland on a foggy day. He has tremendous knowledge of the area and I was thankful that he was able to reassure my daughter that she didn’t have to worry—being a city kid; she had some fears of the trails and the possibile danger.
The living space had everything we needed to feel at home. It was spacious and cozy, stocked with a fantastic selection of books for rainy days and evenings, and filled with little surprises. It was fun to search for the secret drawer, and to drink tea each day from the adorable bunny mugs. This was an unforgettable getaway, and we hope to return for more amazement and inspiration. We highly recommend Bruce’s Ferncrest! — Jody B. @ HomeAway
We were simply thrilled with our stay at Ferncrest. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy nature’s beauty and quiet in a wonderful location right next to Acadia, this is the place for you.
Bruce is a wonderful and kind host and provided us with advice and information prior to the booking. He gave us some excellent hiking tips and made every effort to ensure we were comfortable. And how could we not be? Bruce has a lovely home and the apartment, which he rents is just so cozy and homely that one struggles to leave. The descriptions provided are absolutely accurate. The only thing one cannot “read” from the website is the charm of the place although photos are telltale signs of it. The location is perfect for exploring the island although we much preferred staying on the Quiet Side than the busy area in the east. We very much enjoyed Thurston’s lobster in Bernard and highly recommend it. There are many interesting and varied trails right on the doorstep too! We hope to return and have already recommended the place to relatives and friends. Thank you, Bruce!
Thanks so much Bruce! Your apartment is perfect—from the full kitchen, to warm bathroom, to cozy bedroom with heavy covers. Thanks for the recommendation of Fiddlers’ Green: a perfect trout! Love the view of the Western Mtns. from the dinning table. Missed the loons calling this a.m.
Glad to know that Ferncrest exists so it can be recommended to anyone looking for a place to stay on the Quiet Side. — Andy C.
