Ferncrest was lovely.

It seems to me if you are going to visit New England, you would want the place you stayed in to feel like it was in New England. Our attic suite did exactly that. The furniture and accessories were chosen with care to add to the New England feel of the suite. The bedrooms were roomy and the mattresses were firm, but not hard. We were seeking a location close to the park and Ferncrest is right there. As city dwellers we were thrilled with the stars in the night sky. Bruce gave us great directions, he is right, the GPS became unreliable as we approached his home. Even though we were late, he greeted us when we arrived, provided us with great info about the park. He was always there when we left in the morning. We found him to be welcoming, helpful, friendly and respectful of our privacy. — Rosemary H. @ AirBnB

A whimsical jewel.

Bruce has turned the top floor of his house into a whimsical jewel of an apartment. If you want to own a charming cottage on the wooded quiet side of Mount Desert Island, save yourself a lot of trouble and just rent Bruce’s place. It feels like home. It is thoughtfully decorated with art, books, music, and items that make you smile. It was clean and comfortable. The beds were firm and allowed us to sleep in the absolute silence of the area without the back aches typically caused by beds in hotels and rentals. The location is far from the crowds of tourists and noise of towns and traffic yet perfectly suited for hiking into Acadia or lovely drives around the entire island. We felt like locals rather than tourists. Bruce is a quiet gracious host respectful of privacy yet available with information when needed. We would highly recommend this rental. — Joan B. @ AirBnB

The perfect place to come “home.”

What a wonderful experience we had staying near Acadia National Park at Bruce’s lovely Ferncrest home. The cozy two-bedroom apartment on the second floor was perfect for our small family, and the kitchen setup was just the right size for us to make most of our own meals. Ferncrest is an older home, but Bruce has done a great job remodeling it and furnishing it so that it is comfortable and practical without losing its charm and character. It was the perfect place to come “home” to after long days of gallivanting. This location borders the western side of Acadia National Park and is minutes from several ponds, lovely walks, and Bass Harbor. It is a scenic and convenient 15-minute drive to enter the more popular sections on the east side of the island as well. Bruce is the ideal host, providing great suggestions, advice, and hospitality. He made sure the apartment was well-stocked with all we’d need for our stay: linens, pillows, books, and cooking utensils. Knowing we had a five year-old daughter, he even pulled out several toys and books as well as a “treasure drawer” for her to enjoy. He provided ample maps and guides for us to use while exploring the park, and gladly answered any questions we had. This was our first AirBnB stay, and we couldn’t have asked for a better fit for this trip. Thank you so much, Bruce! We hope to return to Ferncrest one day! — Mary D. @  AirBnB

On The Quiet Side.

The house is on a quiet side street in the western portion of Acadia. The most popular attractions in Acadia are on the eastern portion, which is twenty minutes away. The house is relatively close to a famous and excellent lobster shack, which Bruce recommended. Bruce lives on the first floor of the house, and the second floor is the space for rent. Bruce was home most of the time, and was very helpful. The apartment was clean and comfortable. It stood out in that it was very well supplied with dishes, kitchen utensils, olive oil, containers, saran wrap, tour books, fast wi-fi, and more. The main detraction was the mosquito population. Mosquitoes were present in much of Acadia, including in Bruce’s driveway. — David L. @  AirBnB

Already dreaming of our return.

Even before we left Ferncrest, we were already dreaming of our return. This idyllic retreat, located on Mt. Desert’s “quiet side” was a perfect place from which to launch adventures across the island and a homey, though well-appointed, place to return to each night. We loved the games and books that lined the shelves, the full kitchen, comfortable beds and small artistic details that made every room feel personal and personally connected to the island. Most of all we loved the view of the meadows and mountains from our window. Bruce was a knowledgeable and generous host whose suggestions led us to swimming and hiking adventures we would not likely have discovered otherwise. With Ferncrest as our home away from home we plan to return to enjoy this beautiful island’s many treasures. — Lisa B. @ HomeAway

Mount Desert Island suite bordering Acadia.

Very comfortable suite within a short distance to Acadia National Park. The rooms are spacious and comfortable offering three levels of pillow firmness with a well stocked library. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and the washer and dryer are very accessible. We had a wonderful time in the park as Bruce was able to direct us locations we had not heard about. Some great swimming holes nearby and several hiking trails. The place is very comfortable, clean and well located. We hope to fit this into our travel plans in the future. I highly recommend this property! — Michaell M. @ HomeAway

Cozy nest for nature lovers.

Really comfortable queen sized bed (we used one room), great views, the sun floods the breakfast table, perfectly private, and a great staging area for exploring Acadia National Park’s east and west sides. Bruce is very friendly and had great suggestions for hikes, tide pooling, bird watching, and biking (he’s a former Acadia National Park Ranger – it was like having our own tour guide!). New washer/dryer are nice amenities, and the little kitchen was perfect for our week’s stay. The listing was very helpful and accurate, and the place is clean. We definitely recommend this relaxing, cozy suite!  — Meg S.  @  HomeAway
